Ottawa – Get ready for Psychedelic Saturday, an all out arsenal of Jimi Hendrix tunes like you’ve never heard before! This years performance will again feature guitarist extraordinaire, Tony D and very special guests, Wild T (Wild T & The Spirit/David Bowie) and Becky Abbott (David Gogo) at Barrymore’s Music Hall (323 Bank St.) on Saturday, March 11 at 8:00 Pm.
Ottawa’s own Tony D has been a mainstay on the local and International blues scene for over twenty years. From his first major gig backing up Buddy Guy an not really knowing who Buddy was to opening for another of his heros, Stevie Ray Vaughan at the National Arts Centre, Tony D has always delivered as a guitarist second to none. An emotionally charged and electrifying performer, Tony D has the distinction of being the only artist to be asked to perform at every addition of Ottawa Bluesfest. The highlight performance was in 1999 when he and cast of friends wowed the hometown crowd as an eleven hour substitute for Gladys Knight, who had to cancel at the last minute. In his formative years, Tony grew up listening to his brothers Jimi Hendrix records and became an instant fan and started learning his style and incorporating it into his own.
A native of Trinidad, Tony “Wild T” Springer moved to Toronto in his early teens and quickly gained a reputation as a hot guitarist and killer vocalist on the club scene. It was during this time that an up and coming young guitarist named Jeff Healey discovered T, who went on to be a major influence on Healey’s playing. “I followed him around like he was a Messiah” states Healey, “I probably learned more from Tony than anybody else, he’s been my Idol for years!” In 1991 Wild T and The Spirit signed a major label record deal with Warner Brothers Records and released their debut album Love Crazy to rave reviews, including the hit single and video “Midnight Blues.” By chance, UK legend, the Thin White Duke himself, David Bowie, saw “Midnight Blues” on Muchmusic while on tour in Canada and offered Wild T the opportunity to play guitar on his new solo album Black Tie, White Noise. The album was released in 1992 with much fanfare and Wild T was asked to perform on a Worldwide tour as guitarist in Bowie’s live band. Suddenly, Wild T was appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with David Letterman. It was a long journey from his first band cover tunes from the late Jimi Hendrix but Wild T had finally hit the big time. Interestingly, in another turn of events, Wild T was asked to play the part of Hendrix in the 1999 film, Daydream Believers – The Monkees Story. Now, not only did he sound like Hendrix but he also looked the part too!
Local singer, Becky Abbott, perhaps best known for her work as part of David Gogo’s touring band, is definitely one to watch as a breakout artist in her own right. Abbott wowed the 20,000 fans who caught her performance with Gogo in support of ZZ Top at the 2005 Bluesfest. They will definitely remember her sultry vocals as a featured singer throughout the show and she is sure to impress singing her favourite Hendrix tunes!
The artists will perform their own renditions of the guitar masters music and celebrate the spirit of Hendrix through the legacy of his music. Come and celebrate the legendary guitarist with our own guitar heros Tony D, Wild T and outstanding vocalist, Becky Abbott. Last years event was a sellout!! So get your tickets early.
Put on your psychedelic threads and head down to BARRYMORE’S and indulge yourself in some Hendrix mania!
