Robert Farrell Band (rfb) featured in the Ottawa Citizen

The great unknown

Robert Farrell would be happy to lose the title of ‘greatest undiscovered guitarist in Canada.’

Robert Farrell has spent the past 25 years studying, teaching and playing the guitar. He knows the ins and outs of the thing and is often heralded for his inventive techniques such as the double slide.

Six years ago, Billboard described him as “arguably the greatest undiscovered guitarist in Canada.” It’s an accolade, but a trying one –“undiscovered” has cachet, but it’s only fun to be that way for so long. As such, frontman Farrell wears the frown of frustration.

We meet one afternoon at the Elmdale Tavern. A regular patron stuffs coins into the CD jukebox, trying to hear most of Exile on Main Street. Paperbacks line the wall and the titles bring to mind classic-rock songs: Behind Closed Doors, Bastard Son, and Dance With the Devil.”Give us the cool look,” the photographer prompts. Farrell and his bandmates flinch in response. Drummer Andrew Lamarche (Artificial Joy Club, David Gogo) and bass player Stephen Clarke (Lister) provide the comic relief — gesturing, joking and launching out random musical trivia to chew over. They, along with Farrell, have successful careers as session players.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST at 8:00 p.m.

Ottawa, ON – UK guitar sensation, Jon Amor returns to Ottawa to perform with his band at Tucson’s (Bank & Hunt Club) on Saturday, November 1 at 8:00 Pm.

Part of the new British Invasion, Jon Amor is one of a number of up and coming UK based artists that are making a major impact in the North American market alongside such stars as Coldplay, Oasis, KT Tunstall and Amy Winehouse. A former guitarist in The Hoax, one of the most successful British blues/rock bands in recent years, Jon Amor gone on to make a name for himself as a songwriter and front man with his solo project. His new Cd “Unknown Soldier” features a special guest appearance by none other than Robert Plant, the legendary Led Zeppelin singer. The Cd was also produced by Plant’s producer Stephen Evans and showcases drummer Clive Dreamer, who is best know for his beats with Portishead and Roni Size.

Amor is excited to be returning to Canada and Ottawa in particular to follow up his stellar show this summer at Ottawa Bluesfest that saw the crowd rise to their feet in ovation of the band’s performance. He also performed to great response at the Thunder Bay Blues Festival in July with his band that features local drummer Andrew Lamarche (Carol Pope/David Gogo) and Pat Giunta on bass.

As part of his Canadian tour, Jon will share the stage as part of a package with Tom Wilson (Junkhouse/Blackie & The Rodeo Kings) and Barney Bentall in Calgary and Edmonton . He has also just been hand picked as the support for U.S. guitar wizard, Joe Bonamassa for three sold out theatres shows later this month in Oakville , Brampton and St. Catherines.
