Soul Bender, David Gogo’s newest CD release, is scheduled for a June 7th street date in Canada and June 21st in the USA.

The album features outstanding new tracks – some original and some unexpected covers – that showcase Gogo’s best guitar and vocal performances ever! Those who have already heard it, all say, “it’s a hit!”

The original works reflect recent changes in Gogo’s life, everyone’s life, as only the blues can.

The covers run the gamut of sources and styles including those from Procol Harum, Elmore James and even Michael Jackson.

There are some interesting new aspects to this album’s arrangements and voicing. For the first time ever, this recording includes strings! Back for more “oomph” is Rick Hopkins with his keyboard antics. As with previous albums Soul Bender includes horns and strong vocal backups from a variety of singers.

Monkey Junk’s Steve Marriner adds some harp, soul and wonderful piano. Back for more Gogo punishment are blues stalwarts (and good music generally) Pat Steward – drums, Doug Elliott – bass, both from The Odds, Billy Hicks – drums, and Jay Stevens – bass.

Having Charlie Quintana on drums on two tracks adds a new twist. Charlie is known as a premier punk rock drummer from his work with bands (Social Distortion, Ju Ju Hounds and The Plugz) as well as touring with Joan Osborne, Cracker and Bob Dylan.

For his 10^th album, Different Views, blues rocker David Gogo definitely had some unique sights to inspire him during the recording process. Instead of the usual confines of your typical recording studio, the bulk of the album was recorded at his home – overlooking the 160-acre Christmas tree farm and forest that make up the Gogo family compound. The keyboard tracks were recorded at Rick Hopkins’ (Colin James, Barney Bentall) home overlooking breath-taking Lions Bay, British Columbia.

The album is produced by Russell Broom (Jann Arden, Sam Roberts, The Dudes, Wil) with guests Shaun Verrault (Wide Mouth Mason), roots diva Carolyn Mark, and jazz great Phil Dwyer popping in at various times. With the drums set up in the foyer and guitar amps in the laundry room, the Gogo house was filled with music and good food. At times, Gogo wasn’t sure if he was a musician or a caterer! The fact that the clock wasn’t ticking, along with Gogo’s vast collection of vinyl albums, vintage guitars and pop culture memorabilia at their fingertips encouraged a stimulating creative environment. This combination has added variety and spice unlike previous Gogo efforts without losing focus of what he’s all about.

Gogo tours extensively and has shared the stage with a multitude of rock and blues legends (B.B. King, ZZ Top, George Thorogood, Johnny Winter, Jimmie Vaughan, Colin Linden, Little Feat, Room Full of Blues, Tom Wilson, The Tragically Hip, among others). He will continue to tour and perform at blues festivals internationally through the summer and fall in support of Different Views.

Although still relatively young in blues years, Gogo has an impressive list of accomplishments. So far David Gogo has three Juno nominations, was named Musician of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, was twice named Guitarist of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards, and has been bestowed with the CBC Saturday Night Blues’ Great Canadian Blues Award for a lifetime contribution to the blues in Canada. David Gogo’s continuing successes have him busier than ever and happy to find acceptance as a world class blues man.

Different Views will be released in Canada through Cordova Bay Records on July 14, 2009.
