New Pearl Reference Series Drums
Pearl Drums has just introduced their new line of Reference Series drums.
“Reference Series drums use a combination of task specific bearing edges and 3 time proven woods, Birch, Maple, and African Mahogany. Using Maple as a sole material has long been the traditional choice for shells and for good reason. Maple provides smooth, well balanced tone that is perfect for a 12″ tom. Subsequently, all Reference Series 12″ toms are composed of 6 plies of Maple. The only single wood shell in the series. Our 10″ and 8″ toms receive 4 plies of Maple with 2 inner plies of Birch for cut and attack. And for maximum response, all 13″ and smaller toms have a rounded 45° bearing edge.”

Custom Snare Drum
I just finished putting together my first custom snare drum. It’s 6.5″x14″, solid 1.2mm black nickel chrome finish brass shell with brass tube lugs, brass tension rods and maple hoops. The wood hoops on the brass shell sound great, it has a good loud crack and amazing side-stick sound. I’m totally digging it.
I call this the “Andy Andrews Custom,” I’m planning on making a few more some time soon.

Summer Update
It’s turned out to be a half-decent summer of gigs. I still wish there were more places to play in town, but all has turned out okay.
“Elegant Chaos” the new Robert Farrell Band CD is currently being mixed at Pebble Studios in Ottawa. We recorded it at the end of June and it is an instrumental album, I will post clips on the audio page once it’s done. Same line up with Robert Farrell on guitar and Stephen Clarke on bass. It’s sounding great so far, and we did it the same way as “Sun House Fury – Part 1”, we just went in and wrote and worked on everything on the spot, very few overdubs or anything rehearsed. The next live date for the RFB is in September in Ottawa for the CD release and we’ll be playing some of the new instrumental tracks.
I’ve been having a great time playing with blues guitarist David Gogo and band. Lots of good outdoor summer gigs and festivals opening for the Tragically Hip and George Thorogood so far. The band rocks with David on guitar and Stephen Wood on bass and Julian St. Martin on keys. More dates coming up so check my Live Dates page for updates.
Also just finished the artwork for Steve Gardiner’s new CD “Sonic Leveling.” I didn’t play on the CD but am part of the live band. More gigs coming soon including a CD Release Party in the near future.
I’ve also been busy doing various sessions around Ottawa with a few different artists. The studio scene has drastically changed the last few years but it’s always cool working for different people on their music.

The Carole Pope gig at Barrymore’s was a lot of fun. Good response from the crowd and the band (Kurt Schefter and I) got to rock it up! Carole is a great singer and songwriter and always a pleasure to work with.

Sabian Cymbal Factory
Just back from a quick trip to the Sabian Cymbal Factory in Meductic, New Brunswick earlier this week. I spent a few hours picking new cymbals with Robert Mason from Sabian in the cymbal vault, found a lot of great sounding new stuff. My friend Dan Loach came along for the marathon ride, we drove there and back in about 36 hours after spending the night in Woodstock, NB.

September Update
I have been working on a few different projects in the last little while, nothing has moving too fast but it’s keeping me busy.
I finally got myself a 15 GB Apple iPod for all my music. So now I have all my favorite tunes (which I own!) and all the tunes of the bands I play in. It is the best thing I have ever bought, I have about 1,600 songs on it so far. It goes with me everywhere, I use it in my truck all the time. It’s great for those long drives to and from gigs.
I also had the time to see Dave Weckl and Steve Smith drum clinics at separate occasions the last little while. The Steve Smith clinic was probably the best one I’ve seen in a long time. He had some impressive patterns going on.
