Summer Update

It’s turning out to be a bit of a slow summer for gigs, but with my downtime I am just relaxing and trying to practice a bit more. I have added some more photos to the site and added a new Robert Farrell track, “Jolee”, on my MP3.com Station page. The Robert Farrell Band also performed this song on Canada AM back at the end of May.

The new THERMOclinE EP was just mixed in North Hollywood, CA by our producer/5th member of the band, Jay Ruston. It’s four tracks with the current line-up. I am working on the artwork for the disc right now, but we are still trying to finalize the title. Sample tracks will be posted on the THERMOsite soon.

I did about ten tracks on American artist Sonni Haskill’s new CD with producer Steve Gould. He flew up to Canada and we did the tracks at a studio in Franktown, just outside Ottawa.

And in the last week I got to see quite a few of my favorite drummers. I saw my buddy Randy Cooke with Long John Baldry, Kenny Aronoff with Melissa Etheridge and a clinic by Dave Weckl. These guys are all different, but they are so inspiring to watch.

THERMOclinE Review

From GodsofMusic.com

ARTIST: THERMOCLINE
SONG: VACANT LOT
GENRE: ROCK / RADIO PLAY!
SIMILAR: THIRD-EYE-BLIND, TRAIN, LIT

Reviewing THERMOclinE’s “Vacant Lot”, 2.13.02

First Impressions: Are these guys signed??

THERMOclinE hails from Ottawa Canada and their current line-up consists of Steve Gardiner on Lead Vocals, Aaron Kronis on Lead Guitar and Vocals, Jay Ruston on bass, and Andrew Lamarche on Drums.
This is what today’s radio play pop-rock is all about! These gentlemen liken themselves to Stabbing Westward, Econoline Crush, STP, and Filter, but do not let this influence your decision to listen to them. I am a fan of most of the aforementioned groups, but I do not hear them in this tune. What I do hear is an original song, which if played every day at 5:PM on the radio, would generate platinum status album sales! If you are into today’s hits from such artists as Nickelback, SUM41, Train, Lit, and Third-Eye Blind, then I guarantee that you will like THERMOclinE!

“Vacant Lot” is a 3:29 A&R dream. This song has everything it needs to satisfy both the musician AND the average audience. It is short. It is to the point. It has absolutely no wasted space. The chorus sticks in your head, and it is FUN to sing a long with! The musicianship is tight, slightly difficult and very well produced. The dynamics rise and fall appropriately from verse to chorus. I can find very little that I would have done differently in this song. Even the guitar solo falls directly into the category of “Today.”

Since the fall of the guitar solo (most commonly noted as being destroyed by Nirvana and Nevermind) guitar solos have become much shorter, less flashy, and more hooky. Aaron’s solo in “Vacant Lot” adds a hook to the music without distracting you from the song itself. It belongs here, and it would be missed if it were removed. I absolutely love the mode contrasts from the verses to the choruses as well. Especially in the middle when the crunchy guitars emphasize the eighth notes!

I will be singing along with this chorus for quite some time!
“I want to forget now
I want to forget now
It’s the way you looked at me
If I don’t remember you
Then you will remember me”

I am adding this song to my station on Mp3.com because it is THAT good!

New Year Update

The new year has started, there have been many ups and downs in the last few months, hopefully this will be the start of a good year.

Lots of THERMOclinE stuff coming up in the next week and a bit, lots of TV stuff. Have a look at the live dates page for updated events. We have already started working on new songs for a new CD that we’ll hopefully be doing soon. My long time friend Jay Ruston has stepped in to play bass for us, and it’s been great. I have worked with Jay producing in the studio so many times, but it’s cool to play with him now (Jay co-produced the last THERMOclinE record).

I am now using Pearl Drums, I just got a beautiful Masters Studio BRX (Birch) kit and a few new snare drums, everything is cool, very well built and great sounding drums. Check my gear page for what I’m using (I haven’t updated the graphic yet!). I should have some photos soon.
Charley Beck Band

Other shows coming up this month is the Charley Beck (AKA: Sarah Sedgman) CD Release Party at Barrymore’s in Ottawa on January 25th.

THERMOclinE “Vacant Lot” video

You can see the THERMOclinE “Vacant Lot” video on the MuchMusic website right now. If you have some time please take a few minutes and have a look at it.

April went by quite quickly, I had a few sessions including some recording with Spankdriven. I was at Canadian Music Week once again in Toronto at the end of March/beginning of April for some gigs with Tammy. I also attended the Sabian Artist Dinner in Toronto which is always an event in itself and met up with some old friends.

March Update

Aaron Saloman has posted an MP3 track of “Alone In Your Song,” one of the songs I recorded with him back in February. Check out his site (www.aaronmusic.com) for the MP3 and some photos from the session.

Tammy Raybould has been nominated in the “Best New Solo Artist” category at the 2001 Canadian Radio Music Awards for her song “Loving You“. Tammy and band will be doing a few shows during Canadian Music Week in Toronto next weekend.

My my live dates page for upcoming shows, I just removed some upcoming THERMOclinE shows that we had to cancel, due to illness in the band. Check the THERMOclinE site for upcoming news and video/radio request information.

I also did the Jimi Hendrix Tribute show again this year with Tony D, Trevor Finlay, Sean Burke and Sal (Artificial Joy Club) sang a few songs. Barrymore’s was packed for it, this was the third time we’ve done it.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year! I know I haven’t done an update in a while but things have been a bit crazy. Not a lot of live dates the past little while, but other “behind the scenes” kind of stuff going on, and it seems to take up a lot of my time. Learning songs, writing charts, web stuff and my life, etc.

Tammy Raybould and band had it’s first live performance in Ottawa in quite some time last week, the show featured some of Tammy’s new material and over the x-mas holidays I redid her web site (www.tammyraybould.com), which once again I was supposed to do for a long time.

Other exciting news for Tammy is that “Loving You” is being featured on “Dawson’s Creek” Episode #70 (#412 “The Te Of Pacey”) which aired in the U.S. yesterday and in Canada on Friday, January 19th. See the “Dawson’s Creek Music Guide” web site.

THERMOclinE‘s video release party, for “Vacant Lot” is this coming weekend (Jan. 20th @ Barrymore’s Music Hall in Ottawa). I have put a up a 30-second clip of the video on the site. The CD “Negative ONE” is being re-released on Sony Imports/Sour Music/Stamina Records in Canada in March. The radio and video campaign starts in February, stay tuned for more info.

I am also playing and recording with singer/songwriter/guitarist Aaron Saloman. He has some cool stuff going on. And playing bass is my buddy “G-ham” — Andy Graham from the TRB band.

I had a quick little last minute session at the beginning of the year with singer/songwriter Susan Wheatley.

The Sarah Sedgman gig in December was cool, there is a possibility of more dates sometime in the future. The band featured Sarah on acoustic guitar and vocals, Colin Mills (from the TRB band) on guitar, Mike Easton and Mike Yelle from Garrity on acoustic guitar and bass. See Sarah’s web site for more info.

If you haven’t been to my site in a while I’ve started to add some photos (possibly some embarrassing ones!), video and audio stuff. I still have a ton more to put on, just not enough time. Unfortunately because of my rush in doing things there are some broken links, so please be calm and don’t freak out. More stuff will be coming soon.
